Fall 2013 Highlights


The Horseketeers had a busy fall in 2013 (as reflected by the date of this posting)! 

In October, the club fielded a team for the Sunshine Region’s annual Dressage Rally.  The Horseketeers rode extremely well, taking first place in their division.  Perhaps even more noteworthy, their excellent HM skills also earned them first place in Horse Management for the entire rally.  Well done, ladies!

In November, both Mikayla K. and Elizabeth M. tested for C1 ratings.  Mikayla tested for C1 Traditional, and Elizabeth tested for C1 Flat.  Both passed with flying colors!

Also in November, the Horseketeers had the opportunity to conduct a fund raiser at the new Dover Saddlery store in Orlando.  To earn donations, the club provided gift wrapping services on Black Friday.  Although the crowds were small in the morning, this did create a great opportunity to check out the store and do some holiday shopping.

The Horseketeers closed out the year with their annual Christmas party.  As always, the gift exchange was a big hit.  With such fun gifts, it was tough for many to decide whether to keep what they drew, or swap for someone else’s present.

2014 looks to bring new members to the Horseketeers.  Some will likely be seasoned riders, while many others will be young and/or less experienced.  Either way, the current team is looking forward to sharing their love and knowledge of horses with our new members in 2014.

Hooray for the "Horsekegators" scramble team, which finished in first place in Division I this weekend! It was a real team effort, as Horseketeers members Rachel M. and Elizabeth M. joined forces with Alligator Creek members Christina T., Brittany B. and Lexi R. to create a winning combination. Equine Education Day

The Horseketeers conducted their monthly un-mounted meeting for January by attending the University of Florida’s bi-annual Equine Education Day.   This special event is open to all Pony Clubbers, and provides outstanding education and instruction at all levels.   Whether you are a seasoned Pony Clubber looking to enter vet school, or have just joined and are unrated, all who attend walk away having learned many new things. The day-long event began with presentations by several of the UF Vet School faculty, some of whom were former Pony Clubbers themselves.   Those veterinarians who had been part of Pony Club commented that they found many of the classes they had taken in vet school were much easier because of what they had learned as members of PC!   They also commented that solid progress in Pony Club was highly valued by the admissions department of the Vet School.   This put big smiles on the faces of many attendees who were aspiring veterinarians!   The morning presentation

Equine Education Day 2012

Going behind the scenes at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine was a huge thrill for the Horseketeers at Equine Education Day this past Saturday. Lectures covered such topics as lameness and the latest on Equine Metabolic Syndrome, and included a video of a foal being born. Demonstrations provided a look inside a horse's stomach, a close-up view of a horse galloping on a treadmill, and a lesson in important points of horse anatormy.  The program wrapped up with a student-led guided tour of the Large Animal barns, operating rooms, and treatment bays, and the Small Animal Hospital. At the end of the tour, participants were able to talk with their student tour guides about how they decided to study veterinary medicine, the competitive application process, and the experience of being a vet student. All in all, an interesting and inspiring day with over 100 of our Sunshine Region and 4H friends! Check out the photostream for lots more photos!
